The “Upside/Downside” Situational Roadmap: A Cartomantic Spread

AUTHOR’S NOTE: In the cinematic cartography of the buccaneers favored by Hollywood, treasure maps invariably displayed an “X” where the prize could be found (i.e. “X marks the spot”). On a different arc, there have been many tarot spreads that use the “best case/worst case scenario” to indicate how a situation can be expected to play out for better or worse.

Here is a layout that employs the “X” paradigm to show the most sensitive point in the development of a matter where, with a little help, it can be intentionally turned toward or away from one conclusion or the other depending on the potency exhibited by the card in that location to reinforce positive results or mitigate negative consequences. It can be used with any kind of cards. Deal them in the order shown below, with the shared “X” card last. Reversal may be used to “shade” the meaning of each position, making it more nuanced or complex.

The first card in each series suggests a divergent starting point, optimistic on one hand and pessimistic on the other, as is often the case when approaching an issue with an uncertain future that could go either way. These cards furnish the raw material on which the reading is predicated. A “bad” card at the beginning of the positive-trend line will convey a sobering reality that must be acknowledged while a “good” card opening the negative-trend sequence could mean “wearing rose-colored glasses.”

The concept behind the “X” card is to resolve or at least reconcile the opposing inputs so the seeker can get “over the hump” and continue on-course with a better idea of what to do. Whether favorable or unfavorable in nature, it will describe some kind of opportunity to make a difference in the outcome. A “good” card here can mean “the fix is in,” while a “bad” one implies that querents have “their work cut out for them.” With a strong enough countervailing card, the initial trend may even change direction although it would take a powerful incentive.

The last card represents the “best-case” or “worst-case” forecast and should be read in combination with the “X” card to reveal how the situation might be steered toward the most constructive end. A “bad” card in the positive-outcome position will impart diminished expectations that, with a remedial initiative, may still present some kind of “silver lining,” while in the opposite case a “good” card will offer an expedient response that softens the blow of a less-fortunate outlook. The diviner’s goal is to provide the most realistic projection possible under the circumstances.
