AUTHOR’S NOTE: To complete my divinatory exploration of the current whereabouts and physical condition of Nancy Guthrie, I generated a horary astrology chart. Although in this type of horoscope I usually give the Ascendant to the missing person as the “Querent,” this time I decided that, since Nancy’s daughter Savannah Guthrie has been requesting public assistance through various law-enforcement agencies, I would make her the Querent and give the Fourth House of the mother to Nancy Guthrie, whose situation is the “Quesited.”.
Some very interesting features came into focus when I did this, involving the Moon, the Part of Fortune, the Venus/Mercury conjunction and the disagreeable fixed star Alcyone at 0 Gemini 15. Although I seldom use the fixed stars, Alcyone tied everything together in a Mutable T-Square. Author John Frawley says of Alcyone (which is in the Pleiades or “Weeping Sisters” constellation): “Weeping” is the main idea here; there will be regret; things will not work out well,” and this aligns closely with the second of the two tarot readings I did on this subject.

The traditional chart ruler, Saturn, is in Pisces in the First House, a sign for which it has no natural affinity, and it is also Lord of the Twelfth House. Interestingly, Frawley raises the specter of “bewitchment.” It’s major testimonies are “the same planet rules both 1st and 12th houses” (check, that would be Saturn ruling both Aquarius and Capricorn) and “there is close contact between Lords 1 and 12” (check, they can’t get much closer than being the same planet). While I doubt that witchcraft is at work here, bamboozlement seems to be plaguing the investigators.
The Sun in Aquarius is directly on the Ascendant and Venus and Mercury are conjunct in Pisces in the First House. Although Frawley says that interception makes no difference in horary judgement, the three Pisces planets are intercepted, and Mercury is the Lord of the Fourth House of the mother, telling me that Savannah Guthrie is deeply confused and disheartened by her mother’s disappearance. The fact that the Moon in Sagittarius in the Ninth House is involved in a “translation of light” by aspect between Venus and Mercury due to squaring both of them, while Venus is in its exaltation in Pisces, seems to greatly emphasize the emotional dimension.
Perhaps the most curious thing here is the presence of Alcyone in the Third House of siblings, and its participation in the T-Square with Venus and the Moon. Law enforcement has spent some time searching the area surrounding the Tucson home of Annie Guthrie, Savannah’s sister. No results have been released, but there may be more to come on that aspect of the investigation. The most unfortunate of fixed stars, Algol, is also in the 3rd House in Taurus, but it is not making any meaningful aspects other than a conjunction with Uranus, which has little to say in horary prediction. The fact that Uranus is the modern ruler of Aquarius and both it and Algol are in a favorable sextile aspect to Saturn, the traditional ruler of this chart, may simply reflect the far-fetched notion that Annie Guthrie is more deeply involved than at first assumed.
First-House Venus at the apex of the T-Square and in its sign of exaltation suggests the high priority that has been placed on finding Nancy, but also the difficulty in making it happen. Like an arrow out of a bow, the T-Square’s influence is projected into the empty Seventh House and the similarly-intercepted sign of Virgo, the other sign of Mercury’s rulership. Since Mercury is in its detriment and intercepted in Pisces as well as being afflicted by an applying square from the Moon, it is reasonable to look across the chart via the T-Square to see where its power is more freely expressed although still not entirely “free-and-clear.”
The idea has been floated that the perpetrator is employed by a maintenance or custodial service, which would fit the profile of Virgo quite well. However, the Sun rules the 7th House and it is strongly placed on the Ascendant, implying that the Querent may have an adversary who orchestrated these events. The 7th House is the house of “open enemies,” which may have a bearing on why Nancy was taken under clandestine circumstances. It is tempting to treat the Sun as being in the 12th House of “secret enemies,” but it is so close to the next house cusp that it would be interpreted as a 1st-House factor. Mars, however, is buried deeply in the 12th House and could indicate a hidden grievance.
I don’t think the fact that the Lord of the 4th is in the First House is telling me anything about Nancy’s location or condition since it implies “right under Savannah’s nose.” Frawley says that the Lord of the Quesited in an angular house is “near at hand” or “near where it ought to be,” and in a Water sign it may be in a “wet place” (which could be hard to find in Arizona outside of swimming pools). The interception of Pisces might mean “under water.” However, Frawley also mentions that Mercury is in its “joy” in the 1st House; it has little power to act other than according to its own nature. Consequently, it may mean information or communication more than physical testimony.
The applying square of the Ninth House Moon to Mercury seems to be saying more about whether Nancy will be found since the Moon – signifying the mother – is the most elevated body in the chart. Although it isn’t shown in the display, the Part of Fortune sits in Sagittarius within one degree of conjunction with the Moon; thus it is a major component of the T-Square and a powerful indication that she will be located in good shape despite other hints to the contrary. The transiting Sun will pass over radical Mercury on the evening of February 24 at the same time that the transiting Moon is moving into Gemini and conjuncting Alcyone before entering the 4th House, which may produce a revelation that affirms the fixed star’s augury. Transiting Mars will cross the radical Sun and Ascendant on February 20-21, shaking up the 1st House and maybe accelerating things a little.
This was a challenging chart to analyze because of the overwhelming 1st House emphasis and the presence of the Lord of the 4th centrally located there. Unless Nancy has been cleverly hidden in the immediate vicinity of her home or her daughter’s residence, the Moon in Sagittarius in the 9th House suggests that she has been transported farther afield, most likely to the South-Southwest. I can’t claim that any of this is sound horary astrology technique since it amounted to “clutching at straws” (kind of like the predicament of law enforcement in this case). The most compelling thing is the active engagement of Alcyone with the Moon, Venus and the Part of Fortune, although it is slightly out-of-orb with the square to Mercury.
