Six Is the Way!

AUTHOR’S NOTE: In the late Dawn Jackson’s “hedgewhytchery” system of playing-card divination, the number Six is considered to represent a “path” that is revealed to the seeker. Although I’m on vacation and don’t have my reference material at hand, we can assume that the path’s origin and terminus are indicated by the pair of cards bracketing the “6” from left-to-right while the experience of the journey is shown by the suit of the card itself. The idea of movement or progress is inherent in the number, which, according to Roger Horne, is the middle expression of the three “harmonies” in the deck (the others being Three and Nine).

I was inspired to write this essay by the recent appearance of the 6 of Spades in a playing-card reading related to whether the querent would move to another city in response to an envisioned employment opportunity. The 6S was at the very end of a five-card line, the rest of which was filled with favorable red cards displaying confidence that she would find the work she desires.

Recognizing that the suit of Spades can indicate division or separation while the specific card describes the field of its operation, I called this outcome a “parting of the ways” symbolic of a necessary relocation and all it entails in the form of both anticipation and disruption. (In short, it was a validation of that aspect of the question even though the nature of the destination was left open-ended.)

I decided to take on the rest of the Sixes using Cory Hutcheson’s short treatise 54 Devils as my model since I have it it on my Kindle and it follows Jackson’s methods.

At the other end of the spectrum from the exacting Spades, the suit of Hearts is associated with sympathetic emotional connections such as home, family and romance, so the 6 of Hearts could be said to reflect a coming-together or “merging of the ways.”

The suit of Diamonds corresponds generally to “money, fortune, luck and happiness,” but also to “messages, news and social interaction.” I prefer the broad term “resources,” with “awareness” secondary. Using the “path” analogy, I’m inclined to see the 6 of Diamonds as the “way of acquisition, appreciation, attunement and resource allocation.”

The suit of Clubs involves “work and business” in general, but more specifically achievement of one’s goals and management of one’s destiny. In that light, I would call the 6 of Clubs the “way of self-determination” or, at its most encouraging, “the way of self-mastery.”

These assumptions are all off the top of my head based on my understanding of suit and number theory but, since I’m developing my own vocabulary for prediction with the playing cards, they seem as good as any others I might encounter during my studies, while always being subject to change if something better comes along as a result of hands-on usage.
