  1. 100% agree. I also find AI useful for some things, often really tedious aspects of my job (academia) that I dislike any way (mind-numbing bureaucratic form filling). But I love writing; I write because I want to communicate what’s inside me to people on the outside, so, asides from all the myriad ethical issues, using AI would be… pointless? As such I don’t use it on my blog, or in my creative writing, or my academic research writing, and I can’t see why I ever would.

(On your last point my husband is an ecologist for local government, and if they wanted to be smart with data centers, they could run the water used for cooling direct to nearby homes for heating in the winter, which would offset a big chunk of the environmental harms. They do it in Finland, and there was a pilot scheme here in the Uk in Essex. But obvs that requires up-front investment, and a govt with a commitment to longterm social good beyond their term in office, so, alas…)

    • I’m afraid the infrastructure upgrades for the millions of homes (in the US many have forced hot-air ducting or radiant electric panels) that don’t already have a hot-water heating system would be a deal-breaker for two reasons: the homeowners would most likely be saddled with the costs, and the homes that don’t have it in place would need to be gutted to install it.

      • Oh yeah, def wouldn’t work for you guys then! The vast majority of houses in the UK have hot water heating systems already in place (hence why there’s been a resistance to moving over to air source heat pumps, as the inverse of the US situation), so it wouldn’t involve major internal works.
